During our research, we put over 30 products to the test. From these 30 electric pencil sharpeners, we whittled the list down to our favorite eight models. We didn’t take our research lightly either. I was particularly impressed with a few of its safety features.

This machine greatly reduces the chance it will vibrate off the table top, break it or the pencil you intended to sharpen. At the very least, a unit that doesn’t stay firmly in place will often deliver a sub-par sharpening experience as it can’t effectively get the pencil sharp from all angles. Because of the anti-skid feet, that’s not a concern here-- one huge bonus with the X-ACTO ProX.
This is a corded model, so you’ll have to ensure it has its own plug near the desk or shelf area. I like the corded models because you don’t have the added expense of battery replacement, but it does limit where you can place the sharpener. For instance, in a classroom environment, you may not be able to have it on your desk if cord isn’t long enough to reach an outlet.
The X-ACTO ProX is designed with longevity in mind. It has helical cutters designed to maintain sharpness. In fact, it lasts up to 33x longer than other sharpeners. It also has auto reset-shutoff to prevent problems with overheating and overuse by those particularly zealous sharpeners.
When the receptacle is taken apart for cleaning or maintenance, it has safety features in place to prevent the sharpener from activating, thus saving fingers!
Now, I do have one concern with this sharpener…
The latest reviews express some concern about the unit wearing out more quickly than before. It could be that these are just a couple of instances in many purchases over the last several months. That’s not unlikely, but still worth mentioning. Even with its glowing reviews, there have been a few over the last 6 months stating the unit isn’t holding up to its previous high standard.

The School Smart Vertical Pencil Sharpener is a close second to the X-ACTO model. This one is slightly different because, instead of a horizontal, classic shape, this one loads the pencils in vertically for sharpening.
Like our previous model, this School Smart pencil sharpener has helical steel blades for maintaining sharpness through high volume use. It also has an auto stop feature for added safety. The blades will not continue to turn if there’s a problem, jam, or other issue that requires maintenance.
But, take note!
This unit will not effectively sharpen colored pencils, so it’s more limited than the previous unit.
The School Smart pencil sharpener is also a corded unit. It does need a power source to operate. Again, this saves added cost for batteries, but it limits where you can effectively place the unit for access.

It is designed for high-volume usage making it perfect for an office or classroom environment. It employs Auto-Stop features that senses when the pencil is optimally sharpened and stop to prevent over-sharpening or unnecessary waste.
My favorite features offered by the Westcott iPoint Evolution Axis:
The Westcott electric pencil sharpener offers many features we don’t get with the other two options. I like that it comes with a warranty and can manage multiple different size and type of pencil. Having the ability to handle high-volume usage and still get a nice fine tip on your colored pencils is really all you can ask for from an electric pencil sharpener. However, this model actually offers more and that’s why it’s one of my favorites!

This X-ACTO high volume commercial-grade electric pencil sharpener is the most expensive sharpener on our list. It comes with several features specifically built for high-volume and high-demand environments.
For starters:
This is the first electric pencil sharpener we’ve reviewed that has a fan built inside to prevent overheating. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems you’d really have to be working this machine hard to need a fan! However, this may be helpful in a large office environment or a testing facility.
This unit is powered via cord and power source. Again, no expensive batteries to consider. That’s particularly important when you’re considering such a high-volume and powerful unit. It’s also able to sharpen regular and colored pencils with ease. It has a size adjuster on the front to accommodate different size pencils depending on your needs.
This X-ACTO pencil sharpener uses dual helical blades to maintain sharpness and longevity of use. Especially important for offices that demand a high-volume of pencil sharpening. It also has what they call PencilSaver technology. This is essentially a sensor inside the sharpener that eliminates over-sharpening or pencil waste.
The most unique feature of this particular unit is the built-in cooling fan to prevent damage via overheating during high-volume use.
All in all, this is a great commercial grade pencil sharpener. The additional cost up front is definitely going to be worth it if you have a high-demand atmosphere!

Our next option is the X-ACTO Power3 electric pencil sharpener. This pencil sharpener has many appealing features. But I do have some drawbacks and concerns.
The extra-large shaving receptacle minimizes time spent emptying the shavings and prevents jams. That’s definitely a perk. I also really like that it works on art pencils, colored pencils, and regular pencils.
I’m particularly excited about the fact it’s powerful, well-made, and quiet enough not to be disturbing to everyone around you. Especially since I prefer a perfectly sharpened pencil--it can take me a while to be satisfied!
However...
This is one of the most expensive models we’ve reviewed so far.
But, the biggest complaint with this X-ACTO unit?
It doesn’t automatically stop and tends to be wasteful when sharpening pencils. If you’ve ever invested in expensive art pencils, you can see how this would be a problem. It makes me wonder if that extra-large shavings receptacle will be a bonus after all. If the sharpener isn’t efficient, the number of shavings produced will be more than a unit with auto-stop features.

Ranking in at number seven is the first Bostitch product we recommend. This is a classical style pencil sharpener with several features that make it a cut above.
The price tag with this pencil sharpener is on the higher side of the units we’ve considered thus far. This is largely due to the little bonus features it has to offer that we don’t see with other sharpeners.
For example:
This pencil sharpener features SharpGlow illumination technology. This is a visual indicator that sharpening is complete and helps reduce waste. I can see this being particularly helpful in a classroom because a visual indicator can be great to teach kids when “enough is enough” during pencil sharpening.

For cleaning purposes, this Bostitch unit has an easy, tool-free cutter cartridge making it easy to do maintenance safely and efficiently. It’s colored pencil compatible as well, making it highly versatile for the classroom or for artists.

It has antimicrobial properties to prevent a buildup of mold or bacteria inside the machine. It is supposed to promote a cleaner classroom or office environment. I wish it had expounded more on how they make it antimicrobial since there was limited information on this process and how long it lasts with long-term usage.
Overall, this Bostitch unit is great for high-volume environments, specifically classrooms and offices. It’s powerful for use over a long-lifetime and quiet enough to not disturb a quiet office or classroom environments.

Our last pencil sharpener on the list is not a pencil sharpener at all. This is the most unique and child-friendly of all the electric sharpeners we’ve reviewed here. The Elmer’s 1680 CrayonPro is an electric sharpener FOR YOUR CRAYONS!
As a kid, I remember being excited when Crayola introduced a built-in sharpener to the back of the box. However, it didn’t take long until that sharpener was dull or jammed with bits of crayon from previous attempts to sharpen. I would have loved to see something like the Elmer’s CrayonPro in my classroom (or even at home). It has auto-stop technology to prevent waste or over-sharpening.
This sharpener has the ability to automatically peel back the paper on your crayon--saving time for all sorts of coloring and art activities!
It’s important to note this sharpener is for crayons only--not pencils (of any kind). The motor is specifically designed for crayons. It’s also ONLY for standard crayon sizes and will not accommodate the jumbo or triangle shaped crayons. It comes with an additional blade cartridge and cleaning brush for routine maintenance.
All in all, this electric crayon sharpener may not be ideal for the office, but it can certainly help in the classroom!
