How many people do you want to fit in the tub? Are you planning to use it by yourself, with a partner, or for hosting a party? Most inflatable hot tubs can fit two to four adults comfortably; some larger models accommodate six or up to eight adults.
Capacity
How many gallons of water does the tub hold? Inflatable hot tubs can contain between 200 and 300 gallons. A tub that can hold only 150 or fewer gallons may be cramped for two or more bathers. Keep in mind, though, that the greater the capacity, the larger (and heavier) the inflatable tubs are when deflated for storage and transport.
Portability
One advantage of an inflatable hot tub over a permanent model is its portability. You want to be able to move one in and out of storage and from one place to another (maybe outside to inside when the weather gets cold) easily. Of course the model’s size and capacity will affect its portability. Check the tub’s dimensions before choosing.
Shape
Most inflatable hot tubs are round. To accommodate more soakers, however, some hot tubs are square or even rectangular to provide more leg room if bathers sit as if they are in a rowboat.
Heater
Comfortable water temperatures in hot tubs usually range between 100°F and 104°F (37°C and 40°C). In hot weather, you may want the temperature lower, like 89°F (32°C) or cooler. In any case, the tub’s heater needs to raise the water’s temperature up to your comfort zone and maintain this temperature. Look for a model with an efficient heater that warms all of the water steadily to your desired temperature in a reasonable amount of time (12 to 24 hours is normal).
Pump
In addition to the heater, the pump works hard to keep bathers delighting in their dip in the hot tub. It inflates the tub, circulates the water, and powers the air jets. Usually, both the pump and the heater are usually enclosed in one container to keep the electrical components dry.
Air Jets
While Jacuzzis and permanent hot tubs have wet jets, most inflatable hot tubs use air jets, which shoot out bubbles instead of water. Although not as strong as water jets, air jets still feel pleasant, providing a tingling, lightly massaging sensation. Find out how many jets a model has and where they are located. One caveat: Typically, the air jets and the heater can’t run at the same time.
Control Panel
A simple digital control panel with a basic LED display should be on top of the pump/heater container within easy reach for bathers in the tub. Check to see if you’re able to touch the settings, like water temperature, the heater timer, and the air jets, without having to climb out of the tub.
Construction
Most inflatable hot tubs are constructed from layered vinyl PVC. What to look for, however, are walls reinforced with polyester, nylon, vinyl, or a blend of these materials. For sturdiness, some inflatable hot tub walls have a segmented design, reinforced with an interior, vertical I-beam structure. These strong walls can support bathers leaning against them or even sitting directly on the tub’s outer wall without bending or buckling.
Hard water system
This addition to a hot tub’s filtration system helps prevent or minimize calcium deposits or the buildup of minerals and scales in the tub. Not all inflatable hot tubs have a hard water system, which doesn’t replace the need for maintaining proper water chemistry.
Saltwater system
Does chlorine bother your skin and/or lungs? Then look for one of the few inflatable hot tub models that come with a saltwater system. This system treats and softens the water (not your skin–this is not saltwater therapy) naturally with salt, not chlorine.
Cover
While not glamorous, hot tub covers are extremely useful for many reasons. They keep debris out and heat in (and speeding up the heating process). More importantly, covers should have childproof locks for safety. Look for a hot tub that comes with a well-fitted cover that has insulation material to retain the water’s heat. Some covers are inflatable to fit the hot tub’s opening snugly. Other covers just lay on top of the hot tub.

Inflatable hot tub models differ in what accessories are included for caring for, cleaning, and enjoying the tub. What a feeling!

But they did have two complaints:

Maintaining Your Inflatable Hot Tub

One of the main considerations we used when picking our favorite inflatable hot tubs was their build quality and durability. While all the models were made well, there are some things you can do to further extend the life of your hot tub.

In fact, you can enjoy many years of soaking in your inflatable hot tub if you take care of it properly. Follow these maintenance tips:

  • Test your water’s pH and alkalinity regularly. Some models come with a water test kit, which makes testing water easy. If your hot tub doesn’t come with a water test kit, no worries. You can grab one here. After testing your water’s pH level, add necessary chemicals to adjust the pH level to between 7.4 and 7.6. A pH level that is too low might damage your hot tub’s vinyl.
  • Sanitize the hot tub each time before you use it. When not using the hot tub, sanitize it weekly using a sanitizing solution.
  • Check the filter (remove and rinse with clean water) at least once a week. With use over time, filters harden, become discolored, and can’t be cleaned well with fresh water–that’s when you know you’ll need to replace them.
  • Drain and replace the water regularly. Drain the tub at least once a month or so. Clean the interior with a mild detergent, water, and a damp sponge. Don’t use abrasive cleaners (like powder) or tools (like steel wool).Then rinse the tub thoroughly to eliminate soapy residue and prevent foaming the next time you refill it.
  • Check the tub for any leaks. If you find one, pat the damaged area dry and patch it (either with the kit that came with your tub or order some spares to keep on hand, here). Apply the patch according to its accompanying instructions.
  • Store the tub out of direct sunlight and away from pests when not in use. Make sure your inflatable hot tub is completely dry (to prevent mold and bacteria growth) and deflated. Some inflatable hot tubs come with a handy carrying case, which may not be best for long-term storage. Putting the tub in a sealed container helps maintain the vinyl’s integrity while in storage.

Drain and Refill Expert Tips

  1. Don’t ignore these signs you need to drain and refill your hot tub: uncontrollable and erratic water chemistry; cloudiness or murkiness despite balanced chemicals and a clean filter; and foaming.
  2. For responsible draining, drain the used and treated tub water into a sanitary sewer, never into a storm drain or natural body of water, like a creek. The Water Quality and Health Council advises, “Find out what type of sewers are nearby. A storm sewer will channel your [tub] water directly into a natural stream or other body of water with no treatment. Which Sanitizer: Chlorine or Bromine?

Hot tub owners are faced with so many different cleaning chemicals–it can be overwhelming! Veteran hot tub (and pool) owners debate over which sanitizer to use: chlorine or bromine. Both chemicals are effective at killing bacteria and germs lurking in your inflatable hot tub.

But what are the differences between them? What one works better?

Let’s break it down:

When most people think of pools, they think of chlorine. Indeed, chlorine is popular because it’s economical and fast acting. The downside is chlorine has a high pH value, necessitating that if you use it, you’ll need to check your tub’s water chemistry balance often. Furthermore, chlorine is notorious for having a powerful smell and can irritate lungs and sensitive skin.

On the other hand:

Bromine is extremely effective in killing bacteria and viruses (especially in warm-water environments like a hot tub) and over a longer period of time. Its low pH value makes chemical balance issues less likely. Even better, bromine lacks a strong chemical scent and is usually easier on the skin.

What’s the catch?

The downside is that bromine is a bit more expensive than and not as fast-acting as chlorine is. Your maintenance costs will increase if you choose to use bromine.

Whether you choose chlorine or bromine, you’re taking the first step to sanitizing your inflatable hot tub water before you step in for a soak.

Environment-Friendly Tips

Eco-friendliness doesn’t usually come to mind when people think of hot tubs. Nonetheless, you can enjoy your inflatable hot tub and still be environmentally conscious by following these easy tips:

  • Fill up the tub with only the amount you need. Of course, you don’t want to overfill the tub and spill water all over your floor if the tub inside. Use a timer to remind you to shut off the water.
  • Heat the tub’s water only when you plan to use it. Of course, you need to fire up the heater 12 to 24 hours before you soak in order to give it enough time to warm up to a comfortable temperature. Use a timer to make sure you are not running the heater unnecessarily. If your tub’s heater doesn’t come with a timer, use an egg timer or your phone’s timer.
  • Choosing a dark-colored tub may help with better heat retention.
  • Keep the cover on while heating the tub to trap in heat. Your water will heat up more quickly and efficiently.

We want you to be able to relax in your inflatable hot tub, but please keep in mind these safety tips:

  • Before entering the hot tub, check the water temperature with an accurate thermometer and test it to avoid accidental burns.
  • Don’t bathe in water over 104°F (40°C). 100°F (37°C) is considered safe for healthy adults. Use caution for young children.
  • According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, soaking in water heated to 106°F (41.1°C) can raise human body temperature to the point of heat stroke, which can be fatal to healthy adults.
  • Pregnant women are advised not to bath in water above 100°F (37°C). Soaking in water hotter than 102°F (39°C) during the first three months of pregnancy can cause fetal damage.
  • People with heart disease, circulatory, diabetes, or blood pressure issues should consult their doctor before using hot tubs.
  • People taking medications that induce drowsiness, like tranquilizers, anti-histamines or anticoagulants, should not use hot tubs.
