In this automatic pool filler review, we will learn how to install a pool water leveler and see some of the best options available in the market.
Why is it important?
Well, for starters you can’t truly relax if you’re worried about the swimming pool’s water level.
Taking a dip in the pool after a long weekend is a great (and much needed) way to blow off steam. But it gets exhausting when you spend hours refilling the pool to the desired water level. Using an automatic pool filler can help you avoid these late-night trips.
So, an automatic pool filler is the best option to keep your pool’s water level maintained. From a depth of two to nine feet, you can manage the water level based on the device. The automatic pool filler reviews you’ll see below are some of the best-selling products in 2020. Before moving on to them, let’s see how to pick the pool automatic filler of your dreams.
How to Pick the Best Automatic Pool Filler?
If you don’t already know what an automatic pool filler is, click here.
Today, we’ll be reviewing the very handy and useful–automatic pool fillers. Other than the reviews we have also put together everything you need to know before buying a pool water filler. From installation to DIY, we’ve tried to cover everything. We have also combined a how-to guide for buying the best automatic pool filler.
So, if there’s a one-stop destination to learn about the best automatic pool fillers it’s here.
To choose only the best products, you must look for these four factors,
- Compatibility
Whether the product supports all pool types, freshwater, and saltwater. You must check the compatibility of the product with the application you have in mind. Is your pool a saltwater pool?
You don’t want to buy a pool filler that does not work on saltwater. That’s just wasting money. Do your research and check the compatibilities of the product before buying it.
- Water Pressure
If the water pressure is high, you may want to consider buying a unit with water reducing valve. If there's no valve, you can buy a water pressure reducing valve from any local hardware store.
Many products don't work for higher water pressures. Buying a water pressure reducing valve solves this problem. But what if the pressure is less. Many products in the market are compatible with low water pressure. So, read the product description before buying.
- Cost and Requirement
Spending a lot of money on a simple pool filler is not wise. Keep looking until you find a product that fits within your budget and complies with all your needs.
With that said, it’s not recommended to buy a product because it’s expensive. Even the most expensive product can be faulty and not fit for your requirements. Pick an affordable yet good product.
- Longevity
How long will the automatic pool filler last?
Is the material sturdy enough to withstand high pressure?
Will it corrode?
Find answers to such questions to determine the longevity of the product. It is not advised to buy a product that is not durable but is expensive.
Advantages of an Automatic Pool Water Filler
Saves time
Most of us are in a hurry, we barely find time to have breakfast let alone filling the swimming pool. So, the obvious benefit of an automatic pool water leveler is it saves time. Because it is automatic, you don’t have to check the water levels weekly.
Saves Money
The automatic feature allows these devices to turn off as soon as the pool is filled up to the desired level. It is possible when filling the pool manually to forget you were filling it and the water continues to overflow. This increases the water bill significantly. Getting an automatic pool water leveler can help you reduce these costs from your monthly expenses.
Saves Power and Water
As mentioned before, it provides the pool with the right amount of water without using a lot of electricity. This cuts costs and saves the machine from overusing the resources.
How to Install an Automatic Pool Water Filler
Note: Before installation, check local building codes for exceptions.
To successfully install a pool water leveler, follow the given steps carefully.
Step 1: Leveler Bucket Installation
Install the bucket in a way that the top of the bucket is flush with a beam of the pool. Use flanges provided to aid in balancing the bucket during the concrete pour.
Step 2: Installing Equalizer Pipe
Install a suitable equalizer pipe (generally provided in the box). It must be straight, using a 45 degree or 90-degree pipe can cause airlock and damage the product.
Step 3: Connect Water Supply Pipe
Attach the supply pipe to the side leveler bucket. Ensure you give the cement enough cure time before applying pressure. This cure time may differ for different manufacturers.
Step 4: Test Autofill
Use the supplied fitting to test autofill but make sure to not overtighten it.
Step 5: Flush Supply Line
Remove the plug and let it flush for at least 60 seconds to get rid of all the debris. This clears all the sand and debris from the supply line. You can follow this step to clear any debris in the future as well but remember to reinstall the valve after cleaning it.
Step 6: Connect Overflow Pipe
Using cement connects the overflow pipe in the port.
Step 7: Install Automatic Pool Leveler
Using a sealer that works with the product, install the valve. Again, don’t overtighten it or it may break.
Step 8: Adjust the Height
To adjust height slightly push the top valve and turn the valve until the desired water level is achieved. You can turn the valve clockwise or counterclockwise based on the model and manufacturer.
Important: These instructions will only work for models with a leveler bucket. Do not force them onto any other type of automatic pool filler.
DIY Pool Water Leveler
If you don’t trust any of the devices you find online or any off the shelf products, you can manufacture an automatic pool leveler of your own. It may take some time and effort but will work just fine and you can replace the parts whenever any piece wears out.
The material you’ll need for this DIY project can be found in any hardware store. Here’s a list of all the things you’ll need:
Sr. No. | Material | Quantity |
1. | Toilet Tank Fill Valve | 1 |
2. | ¾” PVC Pipe (min. 2 feet) | 1 |
3. | ¾" PVC Elbows (90 degrees) | 3 |
4. | ¾” Slip Fit to ½” Threaded Reducer | 1 |
5. | ½” Threaded Coupler | 1 |
6. | Hose Threaded to ½” Reducer (Brass) | 1 |
7. | Waterproof Epoxy Stick | 1 |
8. | Teflon Tape | 1 |
9. | PVC Pipe Cement | 1 |
10. | ¾” PVC 4 Way Cross Section | 1 |
11. | ¾” PVC End Cap | 2 |
To cut the PVC pipes you must also be equipped with a PVC pipe cutter or saw. You’ll also need a pair of groove lock pliers.
You will get all these supplies within $20. So, you will have a sturdy, fully functional automatic pool filler without messing your budget.
Now, let’s see how all these materials can be combined to create the best automatic pool leveler.
- Cut the Vertical Piece of Pipe
Measure the piece of PVC pipe that will hold the entire assembly. Cut it vertically.
- Add the Elbows
Attach two 90-degree elbows on each side of the vertical piece facing opposite directions.
- Attach Toilet Valve
Cut off approximately one inch of epoxy, knead it until a uniform color appears. Tear it into half and roll out one part using a rolling pin. Get it long enough to around the valve. Wrap it on the threads and insert it as far as it goes inside the tube.
Form a seal from the other half and place it smoothly on the pipe. Wait for an hour for the epoxy to dry before continuing to the next step.
- Cut Two Shorter Lengths of PVC Pipe
Cut two 6-inch pieces of pipe and insert them in the 90-degree elbow you attached in step 2.
- Assemble Coupler
Take the ¾” slip fit to ½” threaded reducer and the Teflon tape. Wrap the thread around Teflon tape. Make sure you wrap it in the same direction that you’ll twist the piece into the coupler. Repeat the same for the hose threaded to ½” threaded reducer.
- Attach Hose Coupler Assembly
Join the hose coupler assembly on either of the 6-inch PVC pipes you inserted in the 90-degree elbow.
- Attach Toilet Valve to Vertical Assembly
Now, join the toilet valve to the short pipe in the vertical assembly.
- Test it
Put the unit in the pool and check if it fits and it is the right height. DO NOT TURN IT ON. We haven’t cemented it yet so it may come apart. First, make sure the float sits in the middle of the water (approximately).
- Cement the PVC
Once you're sure that the size and fit are right. If it is not the right size, you can cut or attach a bigger PVC pipe Remove the joints one at a time and stick them in place with the glue in a circular motion. Insert the pipe and hold for 30 seconds. Wipe off any excess cement. Repeat the process on every joint and let dry for 2 hours before moving on to the next step.
- Test and Readjust in the Pool
Once dry, take it out and place it in the pool. Connect it with a common garden hose and turn the water on. Adjust the height of the valve until the water shuts off.

The plastic valve works at a pressure of 20 to 50 psi. So, if the water pressure is higher than that, you may want to buy a pressure reducing valve.
The high-quality polystyrene adds strength and durability to the unit. You won’t need any additional hardware just a standard ¾ inch garden hose. If you want the same product in an aluminum housing, try its variant- the TM830. It supports saltwater and freshwater swimming pools.

Specification:
- Product Dimensions: 4 x 7 x 1.5 inches
- Product Weight: 1.6 ounces
- Brand/Manufacturer: Kerick Valve
Key Features:
- PVC construction and 18-8 stainless steel hardware
- Rate of flow is 40 psi and 50 psi for 1.3gpm and 1.5gpm respectively
- Float ball rises and drops with the water level
Why we like it: This is a cheaper alternative that works as described when the water pressure is low
The Kerick Valve MA052 PVC Mini Float Valve is a tank-mount style automatic water filler pool owner must-have. You can get in a five-pack, four-pack, three-pack, two-pack, or as a single unit. Its greatest asset is its affordability. Competing with $50 to $150 products, this humble mini float is a steal.
It may not be as sturdy as the expensive options but for the price you pay, replacement is not an issue. The PVC construction prevents corrosion and you get extended threads on the inlet side of the valve. It uses an NPT Male connector that measures 3/4th of an inch in diameter.
The float valves use a rod and float ball combination to manage the flow control of the tank. The float ball rises with the water level in the tank changing the angle of the valve. This combination shuts or opens the inlet lever. The material of the float valve must be compatible with the liquid that will flow through it (in this case, water). So, if you want to use it for some other liquid contact the company and check the product’s compatibility.
The box contains two items,
- 1 valve
- 1 float ball
However, if you want a valve suitable for high water pressure, then we recommend buying a pressure reducing valve. The Kerick Valve MA 052 PVC Mini Float Valve works only if the estimated rate of flow is less than or equal to 1.5 gallons per minute at 60 psi.
Easy installation
Lightweight
Good when the water pressure is low
Not good under high pressure
Starts leaking after a while
The automatic pool water levelers mentioned above are all great to maintain the water level of your pool. They are affordable, and the reviews can help you get a clear idea of which one to buy for your pool. Make sure to choose the product according to your pool’s size, volume, and type. Swimming pool maintenance can get challenging without the right parts. For this, you will need an automatic pool filler.
Buying an automatic pool filler is not an easy task. From the thousands of options available online, it is natural to get confused. It becomes a lot more exhausting when you don’t know what you’re looking for. To choose the most befitting pool leveler you must consider these three factors:
- Money
Finding an affordable or reasonably priced pool filler is a must. You cannot buy a product only because it is cheap. Similarly, an expensive product doesn’t always guarantee results. Ensure that you’re not overpaying for a low-quality product.
It is not wise to blow our entire budget on a single pool filler.
- Water Level and Pressure
How big is your pool? How deep do you need the pool to be?
Compare different options and find one that works well for the depth you want.
While you’re at it, look at options that work for the water supply pressure in your area. If you want one that works with high pressure, then check the product description and see the psi value before deciding.
- Compatibility
There are different types of automatic pool fillers that work under different conditions. Some are compatible with saltwater pools and some with fresh water. Some work best with in-ground pools while the rest with above ground pools.
However, there are many versatile options well-suited for all these conditions. Our list and research were primarily based on such products.
Maintenance of Automatic Pool Filler
If you own an old swimming pool, you’re aware of the dreadful late-night trips to fill the pool after a long day at work. To save you this trouble, the best option is to buy an automatic pool filler.
But what if this device ends up being high maintenance or even worse, noisy?
Imagine this, you’re fast asleep at 3 am and you suddenly hear a deafening gurgling noise. You put on earplugs and try going back to sleep.
Ignoring this noise is not the solution. It won’t stop until you fill the pool with water to maintain the water level. To help you avoid this problem, you must keep your automatic pool filler well maintained.
There is nothing much you can do to keep the pool autofill operating correctly. Just check it occasionally and ensure it is working as expected. The floats may need adjustments but other than there’s nothing much buyers can do.
Managing Leaks
Sometimes leaks may occur and cause water loss. If not maintained properly, the bucket or cylinder may crack. Minor cracks can be repaired using pool putty but if a valve begins to malfunction, it can cause leakage.
Sometimes an overflowing bucket can also be misjudged for a leak. This can be because of too much rain or an incoming water supply line. In severe cases, you can shut it off temporarily.
For proper winter protection, you can winterize the automatic pool filler.
